Publishing house Sretensky stavropegic the monastery always happy with wonderful books. I hasten to present (in my opinion) one of the best publications for children - " Alphabet for Orthodox children". The book is worthy of all kinds of praises! Firstly, I would like to mention a thematic selection of poems for each letter of the alphabet. Each poem has a moral aspect, cognitive and educational functions. Secondly, amazing illustrations deserve special attention. Each illustration is concisely combined with text , which contributes to a more detailed perception of what is written and helps to figuratively reveal the theme of the poem. The illustrations are large enough, juicy. For each of the pictures, the child can independently compose his story on a given topic. Very kind and pleasant alphabet in every sense. I bought the baby 3 years old, read from I’d like to note how such literature is lacking for our children! I highly recommend it!

The Assumption of the Blessed Lady of Our Lady and Ever-Virgin Mary

The Assumption of the Blessed Lady of Our Lady and Ever-Virgin Mary

After the Ascension of the Lord, the Mother of God remained in the care of the Apostle John the Theologian, and in his absence lived in the house of his parents near the Mount of Olives. For the apostles and all believers, She was comfort and edification. Talking with them, the Mother of God told about the wonderful events of the Annunciation, the seedless conception and the incorruptible from Her birth of Christ, His infancy and all earthly life. Like the apostles, She planted and affirmed Christian church By his presence, word and prayers. The reverence of the apostles to the Blessed Virgin was extremely. Upon receiving the Holy Spirit on a significant day of Pentecost, they stayed in Jerusalem for about 10 years, serving the salvation of the Jews and wanting to see and hear Divine words from Her more often. Many of the newly enlightened by faith even came from distant lands to Jerusalem to see and hear the Most Holy Theotokos.

During the persecution erected by Herod against the young Church of Christ (Acts 12, 1-3), the Blessed Virgin Mary, together with the Apostle John the Theologian, retired to Ephesus in 43, in which the Apostle John the Theologian had a lot to preach the Gospel. She was also in Cyprus at Saint Lazarus the Four-Day, who was bishopric there, and on Mount Athos, of which, according to Saint Stephen the Holy One, the Mother of God prophetically said: "This place will be for me in the lot given to Me from the Son and My God. I I will be the Intercessor of this place and God Intercessor about him. "

The reverence of the ancient Christians for the Mother of God was so great that they preserved everything about Her life that they could only notice from Her words and deeds, and even conveyed to us about Her appearance.

According to the legend, based on the words of the holy martyrs Dionysius the Areopagite († October 3, 96) and Ignatius the God-bearer († December 20, 107), St. Ambrose the Mediolansky in the work “On the Virgin” wrote about the Mother of God: “She was not a Virgin only body , but also soulful, humble in heart, prudent in words, prudent, eloquent, lover of reading, hardworking, chaste in speech. The rule was to not offend anyone, to be kind to everyone, to respect elders, not to envy peers, to avoid boasting, to be sanity, to love virtue: When did she even offend her parents with an expression of face, when she was in disagreement with her relatives? When she was proud of a modest person, laughed at a weak person, evaded the poor? : the movements are modest, the tread is quiet, the voice is even, so that Her bodily appearance was an expression of the soul, the personification of purity. ate only at the request of need, but even then, when Her body was at rest, She was awake, repeating what she had read in a dream, or thinking about fulfilling the intended intentions, or predestining new ones. I only went out of the house to the church, and that was accompanied by my relatives. However, although She appeared outside Her house accompanied by others, She herself was the best guardian for herself; others guarded only Her body, and She vowed of Her customs herself. "According to tradition, preserved by church historian Nicephorus Callistus (fourteenth century), the Mother of God" was of medium growth, or, as some say, somewhat more average; golden hair; eyes are fast, with pupils as if the color of olive; the eyebrows are arched and moderately black, the nose is oblong, the mouth is blooming, filled with sweet speeches; the face is not round and not sharp, but somewhat oblong; the hands and fingers are long ... She kept decency in conversation with others, did not laugh, did not resent, and was not particularly angry; completely artless, simple, She did not think of herself at all and, far from effeminacy, was distinguished by complete humility. Regarding the clothes she wore, She was content with their natural color, which Her sacred head cover now proves. In short, a special grace was revealed in all Her actions. "(Nicifor Callistus borrowed his description from Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus, († May 12, 403); Letter to Theophilos about icons. Translation of the text of Saint Epiphanius was placed in the Great Fours and Mineas of Metropolitan Macarius . M., 1868, September, p. 363).

The circumstances of the Assumption of the Mother of God are known in The Orthodox Church from the time of the apostles. In the 1st century, the Holy Martyr Dionysius the Areopagite wrote about Her Assumption. In the II century, the legend of bodily relocation Of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Heaven is in the writings of Meliton, Bishop of Sardia. In the 4th century, St. Epiphanius of Cyprus points to the tradition of the Assumption of the Mother of God. In the 5th century, St. Juvenal, Patriarch of Jerusalem, said to the holy noble Greek queen Pulcheria: "Although in Scripture there is no narrative about the circumstances of Her demise, however we know about them from the oldest and most faithful tradition. "This tradition has been collected and described in detail in the church history of Nicephorus Callistus in the fourteenth century.

By the time of her blessed Assumption, the Blessed Virgin Mary again arrived in Jerusalem. Her glory as the Mother of God has already spread throughout the earth and armed many envious and proud ones against those who attempted her life; but God kept her from enemies.

She spent days and nights in prayer. Often the Blessed Virgin Mary came to the Holy Sepulcher, incense burned here and knelt. More than once the enemies of the Savior attempted to prevent her from visiting her holy place and begged the high priests for guard to guard the Tomb of the Savior. But the Holy Virgin, invisible to no one, continued to pray before him. On one of these visits to Golgotha, the Archangel Gabriel appeared before Her and announced Her imminent transfer from this life to Heavenly life, forever blessed. As a guarantee, the Archangel handed Her a palm branch. With the Heavenly News, the Mother of God returned to Bethlehem with the three virgins who served her (Zipporah, Eugea and Zoila). Then She called forth the righteous Joseph of Arimathea and the disciples of the Lord, to whom she announced her imminent Assumption. The Blessed Virgin also prayed that the Lord would send the Apostle John to Her. And the Holy Spirit delighted him from Ephesus, placing it near the place where the Mother of God reclined. After the prayer, the Blessed Virgin burned incense, and John heard a voice from heaven, concluding Her prayer with the word "Amen." The Mother of God noticed that this voice means the imminent arrival of the apostles and the Holy Powers of the Immortal. The apostles, whose number cannot be counted, have flocked together, says St. John of Damascus, like clouds and eagles, in order to serve the Mother of God. Seeing each other, the apostles rejoiced, but asked each other in bewilderment: why did the Lord gather them in one place? Saint John the Theologian, with joyful tears welcoming them, said that it was time for the Mother of God to depart to the Lord. Entering the Mother of God, they saw her beautifully sitting on a bed full of spiritual joy. The apostles greeted Her, and then told of their wonderful admiration from the place of preaching. The Blessed Virgin glorified God that He heard Her prayer and fulfilled the desire of Her heart, and began a conversation about her impending demise. During this conversation also miraculously the apostle Paul also appeared with his disciples: Dionysius the Areopagite, the marvelous Jerotheus, the Divine Timothy and others from among the 70 apostles. All of them were gathered by the Holy Spirit, so that they could receive the blessings of the Blessed Virgin Mary and better arrange the burial of the Mother of God. She called each of them to herself by name, blessed and praised faith and their labors in the preaching of the gospel of Christ, wished everyone eternal bliss and prayed with them for peace and prosperity of the whole world.

The third hour came when the Assumption of the Mother of God was to be completed. Many candles were burning. The holy apostles with chants surrounded a beautifully decorated bed on which the Most Holy Theotokos was lying. She prayed in anticipation of her exodus and the coming of her longed Son and Lord. Suddenly, the indescribable Light of Divine Glory fluttered, before which the burning candles faded. Those who saw were horrified. The top of the room seemed to disappear in the rays of immense Light, and the King of Glory himself descended, Christ, surrounded by many Angels, Archangels and others Heavenly forces with the righteous souls of forefathers and prophets, who once foreshadowed the Blessed Virgin. Seeing His Son, the Mother of God exclaimed: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in Bose my salvation, as a specter of the humility of her slave” - and, rising from the bed to meet the Lord, she bowed to him. The Lord invited Her to the abode Eternal life. Without any bodily suffering, as if in a pleasant dream, the Blessed Virgin put her soul in the hands of Her Son and God.

Then the joyful angelic singing began. Accompanying the pure soul of the God-Bride with awe as the Queen of Heaven, the Angels cried out: “Rejoice, Gracious, Lord be with you, blessed be your wives! Behold the Queen, Mother of God, come, take the gate, and this will bring up the Most Holy Mother of God for the first time; man’s salvation is quick. We can’t look at Nyuzh too, and That worthy honor cannot be given back weakly "(sticher of the feast on" Lord, cries "). The gates of heaven were elevated, having met the soul of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cherubim and Seraphim joyfully glorified Her. The gracious face of the Mother of God shone with the glory of divine virginity, and a fragrance spilled from the body.

Divine was the life of the Blessed Virgin, marvelous and Her Assumption, as the Holy Church sings: “The God of the universe will show you, the Queen, miracles that exceed the laws of nature. And at the time of His birth, He preserved Your virginity, and in the grave he kept Thy body from decay” ( canon 1, canto 6, troparia 1). While reverently and fearfully kissing the body, the apostles were sanctified from it and filled with grace and spiritual joy. For greater glorification of the Blessed Virgin Mary omnipotent power God healed the sick, with faith and love, touching the sacred bed. Having mourned their separation from the Mother of God on earth, the apostles proceeded to burial Her pure body. The holy apostles Peter, Paul, James and others from among the 12 apostles carried on their shoulders a bed on which the body of the Virgin was reclined. Saint John the Evangelist walked ahead with a heavenly radiant branch, while other saints and many faithful accompanied the bed with candles and censers, singing sacred songs. This solemn procession began from Zion through all of Jerusalem to Gethsemane.

During his first movement over the pure body of the Mother of God and all those who escorted Her, suddenly an extensive and radiant cloud circle appeared, like a crown, and the face of the apostles joined the face of the Angels. One could hear the singing of the Heavenly Powers glorifying the Mother of God, which echoed the earthly voices. This circle with heavenly singers and radiance moved through the air and accompanied the procession to the very place of burial. Unbelieving residents of Jerusalem, struck by the extraordinary grandeur of the funeral procession and embittered by the honors given to the Mother of Jesus, reported this to the high priests and scribes. Burning with envy and vengeance on everything that reminded them of Christ, they sent their servants to disperse those who accompanied them, and burned the very body of the Mother of God. Excited people and soldiers fiercely rushed to the Christians, but the cloudy crown that accompanied the procession through the air descended to the ground and, as it were, walled it. The persecutors heard footsteps and singing, but they saw none of the mourners. Many of them were affected by blindness. Out of jealousy and hatred of Mother Jesus of Nazareth, the Jewish priest Affonia wanted to knock over the bed on which the body of the Blessed Virgin was reclining, but the Angel of God invisibly cut off his hands, which touched the tomb. Seeing such a miracle, Affonia repented and confessed with faith the greatness of the Mother of God. He received healing and joined the host of those who accompanied the body of the Mother of God, becoming an ardent follower of Christ. When the procession reached Gethsemane, there, with weeping and sobbing, the last kiss of the pure body began. Only in the evening the holy apostles could put him in a coffin and close the entrance to the cave with a large stone. For three days they did not leave the place of burial, performing unceasing prayers and psalms. According to the wise look of God, the Apostle Thomas was not destined to be present at the burial of the Mother of God. Arriving on the third day in Gethsemane, he fell with bitter tears in front of the coffin and loudly expressed regret that he had not received the last blessing of the Mother of God and farewell to Her. The apostles, in heartfelt pity for him, decided to open the cave and give him comfort - to bow to the holy remains of the Virgin. But, having opened the coffin, they found in it only Her burial shroud and were thus convinced of the wondrous ascension of the Blessed Virgin with the body to Heaven.

On the evening of the same day, when the apostles gathered in the house to support themselves with food, the Mother of God herself appeared to them and said: "Rejoice! I am with you all the days." This made the apostles and all those who were with them so happy that they picked up a portion of the bread that was put for a meal in memory of the Savior ("part of the Lord") and exclaimed: "Blessed Virgin Mary, help us." (This marked the beginning of the rite of the Panagia offering - the custom of offering a portion of bread in honor of the Mother of God, which is still kept in monasteries.)

The Belt of the Mother of God, Her holy garments, kept in awe and divided by the face of the earth into parts, have worked and work wonders. Her numerous icons everywhere pour currents of healing and signs, and Her holy body, taken to Heaven, testifies to our future stay with him. It is not left to the random changes of the passing world, but incomparably more exalted by the glorious ascension to heaven.

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated with special solemnity in Gethsemane, at the place of Her burial. Nowhere is the heart so sad when separated from the Mother of God, and nowhere else it rejoices, convinced of Her intercession for peace.

The Holy City of Jerusalem is separated from the Mount of Olives (Mount of Olives) by the valley of Kedron or Jehoshaphat. At the foot of the Mount of Olives there is the Garden of Gethsemane, the oil-bearing trees of which bear fruit even now.

The Holy Father God Joachim reposed as an 80-year-old man several years after the Entry into the Church of the Blessed Virgin. Saint Anna, remaining a widow, moved from Nazareth to Jerusalem and lived near the temple. In Jerusalem, she acquired two estates: the first at Gethsemane, and the second in the valley of Jehoshaphat. In the second estate, she arranged a crypt for the deceased family members, where she was buried with Joachim. There, in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Savior often prayed with His disciples.

The pure body of the Mother of God was buried in the family cemetery. From the very burial, Her Christians reverently honored the tomb of the Mother of God and built a temple in that place. Precious swaddles were kept in the temple, with which a pure and fragrant body was twisted.

The Holy Patriarch of Jerusalem Juvenal (420-458) asserted before the Emperor Marcian (450-457) the authenticity of the tradition of the miraculous Ascension of the Mother of God to Heaven and sent his wife, Saint Pulcheria († 453; commemorated on September 10), the burial sheets of the Mother of God, which he took from her grave. Saint Pulcheria laid these veils in the Blachernae church.

There is evidence that at the end of the 7th century an upper church existed over the underground temple of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, from the high bell tower of which was seen the dome of the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord. Traces of this church are now not visible. In the 9th century, a monastery was built near the underground Gethsemane temple, in which more than 30 monks labored.

The temple was greatly destroyed in 1009 from the persecutor of the holy places of Hakim. Significant changes, traces of which remain to this day, were made by the crusaders in 1130. In the XI-XII centuries, part of the carved stone disappeared from Jerusalem, on which the Savior prayed on the night of His tradition. This part of the stone was in the Gethsemane Basilica until the 6th century.

But, despite the destruction and change, the overall original cruciform plan of the temple has been preserved. At the entrance to the temple on the sides of the iron doors are four marble columns. To enter the temple, you must go down the stairs of 48 steps. On the 23rd step, on the right side there is a chapel in honor of the holy Theotokos Joachim and Anna with their tomb, and on the contrary, on the left side is the chapel of the righteous Joseph the Betrothed with his tomb. The right side-altar belongs to the Orthodox Church, and the left-side belongs to the Armenian-Gregorian (since 1814).

The Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God has the following dimensions: 48 arshins long and 8 arshins wide. Earlier in the temple, in addition to doors, there were windows. The whole temple is decorated with many lamps and offerings. Two small entrances lead to the tomb of the Mother of God: they enter with the western doors, and exit with the north. The tomb of the Most Holy One is covered with precious curtains. The funerary bed of the Mother of God is carved from stone in the image of the Hebrew tombs and is very similar to the Holy Sepulcher. Behind the tomb is the altar of the temple, in which the Divine Liturgy in Greek is daily performed.

Oil trees on the eastern and northern sides of the church in the 7th-8th centuries were acquired by the Orthodox from the Turks. Catholics acquired oil trees on the eastern and southern sides in 1803, and the Armenian Gregorians on the western side in 1821.

On August 12, at 2 a.m. in Little Gethsemane, the rector of the temple of Gethsemane makes Divine Liturgy. At the end of the liturgy at 4 o’clock in the morning, the abbot, in full vestment, performs a short prayer in front of the light shroud, lays it in his hands and solemnly carries it to the temple in Gethsemane, where the holy tomb of the Mother of God is located. All members of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, headed by the head of the Mission, annually participate in the transfer of the holy shroud, called the "litany".

The rite of the burial of the Mother of God in Gethsemane begins according to custom on the morning of August 14. Many people, led by bishops and clergymen, depart from the Jerusalem Patriarchate (near the Church of the Resurrection of Christ) on a sad path. On the narrow streets of the Holy City, the funeral procession moves to Gethsemane. In the forefront of the procession are the icon of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. On the way, the icon is greeted by pilgrims, kissing the face of the Most Holy One and bringing children of different ages to the icon. The clergy marched in two rows behind the clergy - monks and nuns of the Holy City: Greeks, Romanians, Arabs, Russians. The procession, lasting about two hours, ends with a paraclis in the temple of Gethsemane. Before the throne, behind the tomb of the Mother of God, a hill is built on which the shroud of the Most Holy Theotokos rests in fragrant flowers and myrtle, covered with precious swaddles.

"O wonderful miracle! A source of Life is supposed in a tomb, and a staircase to Heaven is a coffin ..." - here, at the tomb of the Most Pure One, these words pierce with their original meaning and sadness dissolves with joy: "Gracious, rejoice, Lord bless you, bless you peace with you, great mercy! "

Numerous pilgrims, applying to the icon of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, ancient custombending over, pass under it.

On the day of the holiday (August 23), a solemn procession takes place again. On the return journey, the holy shroud of the Blessed Virgin Mary is carried by the clergy, led by the rector, Archimandrite Gethsemane.

Reading the Gospel with the Church

Read the gospel with the Church. Gospel of Luke. Chapter X, Art. 38-42; XI, 27-28.

CHAPTER 10.

38 In the continuation of their journey He came to one village; here a woman named Martha received him into her house; 39 she had a sister named Mary, who sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to His word.

40 Martha, however, cared for a great treat and, going up, said: Lord! or do you need that my sister left me alone to serve? tell her to help me.

41 Jesus answered her: Martha! Martha! you care and fuss about a lot 42 but one is only necessary; Mary chose the good part, which will not be taken from her.

CHAPTER 11.

27 When He said this, one woman, raising her voice from the people, said to Him: blessed is the womb that bore You, and the nipples that nourished You!

28 But He said: Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

TRANSITION TO ETERNAL LIFE: Word on the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

At the singing of the Mother of God gives a completely new meaning to the transition of man from this life to eternal life. Assumption - a person literally falls asleep in order to meet with the Lord in the kingdom of heaven. There was the grief of a temporary separation, but joy filled the hearts of people and Angels, who solemnly escorted the Mother of God on this path. Death and sorrow no longer had such power over them. And the Mother of God really only fell asleep: already on the third day her bodies were not found in the tomb, she was already in the kingdom of heaven.
